We recommend a minimum of the following regime for Ostendo backups. This Ostendo database and the Ostendo application both need to be backed up. We recommend that you regularly check that the backup files are being created and that you test restoring backups to ensure that they are working correctly. It is too late to find out that you backups are not working properly after you have lost your data.

  1. Three types of backups, onsite backup, offsite backup on an external hard drive and online backup. These should use different backup systems to minimise the risk of failure by one of them.
  2. Test restoring each type of backup every three months to ensure the backups are working.
  3. Two complete backups kept and stored per day of the live Ostendo backup files. Keep at least one week of daily backups.
  4. Keep and store a weekly backup as per 1. Keep at least six previous weeks.
  5. Keep and store a monthly backup as per 1. Keep at least six previous months.
  6. Keep and store a three monthly backup as per 1. Keep at least four of these.
  7. Keep and store a six monthly backup as per 1. Keep at least three of these.
  8. Keep and store a one year backup as per 1. Keep at least two of these. This is best kept when the financial year end has been completed.

Ostendo runs on a Firebird database which is not VSS aware. The Ostendo Firebird database should not be backed up live by backup software that uses the VSS service such as ShadowProtect. We can install an internal backup system that can take live backups of the Ostendo Firebird database for your backup systems to pick up. Please contact us for more information about backing up the Ostendo Firebird database.
